As you probably know by now, I’ve fallen in love with thrift shopping and digging for amazing preloved pieces – but how can you find good stuff in op shops without having to rummage? I know not everyone is cut out for rummaging, and even those of us who can tolerate it can’t be bothered sometimes.
I’ve rounded up the best Melbourne op shops where you’ll find high quality stuff in minutes. Now let it be said, you probably won’t walk into these stores and score a designer piece for $5. The rummage-free convenience does come at a cost, but if you’re wanting to look for something in particular, or you just hate thumbing through hanger after hanger, it’s worth the extra bucks.
Toorak Op Shop
1A Carters Avenue, Toorak
Nestled in the heart of Toorak Village, it’s easy to see why this boutique-style preloved haven is as good as it is! Packed full of designer donations from flashy locals, expect Jimmy Choo, Phillip Lim, Lisa Ho, and more.
Best spot: Jimmy Choo strappy heels for $50
Australian Red Cross Richmond
120 Swan Street, Richmond
A diamond among Richmond’s ultra-cool drinking and dining scene, the Australian Red Cross on swan street is a palace of organisation. Totally clutter free, you’ll definitely find some decent pieces on the racks. A less designer feel than Toorak, but you’ll definitely spot immaculate condition bits from the likes of Cos, Country Road, Karen Millen and Witchery.
Best spot: Karen Millen 100% leather maroon pencil skirt for $40
The Ashy Op Shop Ashburton
285B High Street, Ashburton
I stumbled upon this one by accident, but it’s definitely one of the more organised ones I’ve seen. In minimal rummaging, you can find Ralph Lauren, Perri Cutten and Lisa Ho pieces, but expect to pay a bit of a premium. The prices are still mega bargains compared to the original retail price though.
Best spot: Gorman puffer jacket for $35
